History
On July 23, 2007 tragedy struck the quiet town of Cheshire, Conn. Two men invaded the Petit family home and took the lives of three wonderful people: Mrs. Jennifer Hawke-Petit, 17-year-old Hayley Petit, and 11-year-old Michaela Petit. Dr. William Petit, though seriously injured in the attack, survived, and is determined carry on the memory of his family.
In 1999 Jennifer Hawke-Petit was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Devastated by her mother’s illness, Hayley raised more than $55,000 for the National MS Society. Michaela would have taken over the efforts as her sister headed to Dartmouth College in the fall.
In August 2007, four teenagers, Megan Alexander, Justin Ivey, Wayne Lawrence and Steve Selnick, decided to organize a basketball tournament to raise money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Connecticut Chapter in honor of the Petit family. They felt – and continue to feel – this is a fitting tribute. Hayley was an avid basketball player and captain of the varsity basketball team at Miss Porter's School. Following the UConn Women's team was something the family enjoyed doing together.
Since the first tournament on March 15, 2008, Dunk it! has hosted 72 teams, and raised more than $22,000. Our coordinating staff has also grown to include nine members, who are committed to the constant improvement and growth of Dunk it! Due to the incredible success of the tournament, the National MS Society, Connecticut Chapter graciously offered to make Dunk It! a chapter event. Due to their generosity we are able, with your help, to continue the fundraising
for the National MS Society that was begun by Hayley and Michaela.
Thank you for your support and for your continuing interest in such an important cause.
